Most straightforward UK drone assignments typically cost from around £250 upwards, while general commercial drone pilot day rates commonly fall around £400 to £800. Specialist survey, inspection, thermal, LiDAR and complex infrastructure work can cost considerably more.

In 2026, expect to pay £250 to £600 for a domestic roof inspection, £500 to £1,500 for a commercial roof survey, and £400 to £800 for a general commercial drone pilot day rate. Specialist inspection, survey and thermal work typically runs £1,000 to £2,500 a day, while high end LiDAR, BVLOS or complex infrastructure jobs can reach £2,500 to £5,000+.

What actually drives the quote?

Two operators quoting the same job can be hundreds of pounds apart for legitimate reasons. These factors do most of the moving:

Travel and mobilisation

Distance from the pilot's base, remote or rural locations, ferry crossings, overnight travel and difficult site access all add time and cost. How travel is charged varies between providers, so it is worth confirming within the quote.

Airspace and operating requirements

The operating environment can affect planning time and cost. Flights near airports, within Flight Restriction Zones or in other restricted or complex airspace may require additional permissions or coordination. More complex operations may also require additional competency or an appropriate Operational Authorisation.

Deliverables

Simple aerial photographs usually require less processing than outputs such as orthomosaics, 3D models, thermal datasets, point clouds or other specialist deliverables. Photogrammetry and drone mapping services carry processing time that straightforward drone photography does not.

Site complexity

Building size, overall site area, people nearby, obstructions, access arrangements, terrain and the amount of coverage required all affect planning and capture. A compact detached property and a live industrial estate are very different pieces of work even when the deliverable sounds similar.

Turnaround

Urgent work can cost more where it requires pilots, processing or other resources to be prioritised. The required delivery timescale should be included in the brief when requesting a quote.

Insurance and compliance

Commercial drone work requires appropriate insurance, and the operator and remote pilot must meet the registration, competency and operating requirements applicable to the assignment.

The exact CAA requirements depend on the aircraft and how and where the operation will be conducted. Some commercial work can take place within the Open Category, while operations falling within the Specific Category require an appropriate Operational Authorisation.

Urgency

Does urgent drone work cost more?

It can. Short notice assignments may cost more where a suitable pilot needs to be mobilised quickly, existing work needs to be reprioritised, or specialist equipment is required at short notice.

Weather, airspace requirements, site access and pilot availability can also affect whether an urgent assignment is possible.

Comparing low cost drone pilot quotes

A cheaper quote is not automatically a problem. Simple aerial photography or straightforward visual capture can legitimately cost considerably less than specialist survey or inspection work. What matters is comparing what is actually included.

Where the assignment involves thermal imaging, surveying, LiDAR, mapping or other specialist work, make sure the quoted provider has appropriate equipment and experience. For condition and defect work, drone inspection services are scoped differently from marketing photography.

The cheapest quote may be completely suitable for a simple job. The important question is whether the provider can legally and competently deliver the specific assignment and outputs you require. For anything that will end up in an insurance file, a planning submission, an asset management system or on a broadcast, use an appropriately registered and insured drone operator with the competency, permissions and authorisations required for the proposed assignment.
