Thermal drone survey cost UK
Thermal drone work is priced separately from standard visual surveys because the payload (radiometric camera) is more expensive, the flight windows are narrower, and the deliverable requires trained interpretation.

Why thermal costs more than a visual survey
- Payload. A radiometric thermal camera (DJI M30T / M3T / M350 XT2) costs 3–10× a visual-only rig. That's reflected in the day rate.
- Flight window. Roof and building thermal surveys are usually flown at dawn, dusk or overnight to maximise ΔT (temperature difference) — antisocial hours, single-attempt.
- Interpretation. Radiometric images need trained interpretation: emissivity correction, reflected-temperature settings, and knowing what a genuine defect looks like vs a false positive from wet leaves or standing water.
- Deliverable. A useful thermal report includes side-by-side visual and thermal frames, temperature scales, defect annotations and often a marked-up plan drawing.
What changes the number
- Site size. A 4-bed detached house takes 20 minutes in the air. A 5MW solar farm takes 3 hours plus a battery swap.
- Weather window. Thermal work needs dry weather, low wind, and ideally clear-sky conditions before flight. Re-scheduling costs.
- Deliverable format. A PDF report is included. Fully processed orthomosaic thermal maps (georeferenced, defect-tagged) add £300–£1,500.
- Standards. Solar O&M contracts often specify IEC 62446-3 compliance — that's a fixed methodology and a pricier report.
When thermal drone is worth it
- Flat commercial roofs where you suspect trapped water below a single-ply membrane — thermal is the only non-destructive method that finds it.
- Solar arrays — a scan spots dead cells, hot-spot degradation, string faults and connector failures across an entire array in one flight.
- Insulation / heat-loss audits on public buildings, retrofit projects and energy audits.
- Post-fire and post-flood inspections — trapped heat and moisture invisible to the eye.
