What can drones inspect?

Buildings and property

Roofs, chimneys, gutters and rainwater goods, façades, cladding and render, warehouses and commercial buildings. Specialist inspection assignments may require particular aircraft, sensors, experience, permissions or site procedures. These requirements are assessed before a pilot is matched to the job, so not every pilot will be suitable for every asset.

What does a drone inspection provide?

It helps to separate two things: data capture and specialist interpretation.

Data capture

Drone pilots primarily capture imagery or other aerial data according to the agreed brief. Depending on that brief, deliverables may include:

  • High resolution imagery of the agreed surfaces and elevations
  • Video walkarounds and orbits
  • Annotated imagery highlighting observed features
  • Thermal imagery, where a suitably equipped pilot is available, showing temperature differences for further investigation
  • Evidence packs for insurers, asset managers and surveyors, structured as agreed in advance
  • Repeat capture where requirements are agreed in advance to support more consistent comparison between visits
  • Original unedited files where requested

Thermal imagery

Thermal imagery can identify temperature differences or anomalies that may warrant further investigation, for example in relation to suspected heat loss, moisture or electrical hot spots. The usefulness of thermal data depends on factors including sensor capability, environmental conditions, surface materials, time of day and the methodology used. Where thermal capability is required, Drone Assisted will seek to identify a suitably equipped pilot for the assignment.

Specialist interpretation

Where engineering, surveying, roofing, electrical, thermal, loss adjusting or other specialist interpretation is required, this may need to be completed by an appropriately qualified professional. Capture gives that person better evidence to work from; it does not replace their professional judgement or sign off.

When another access method may still be required

Drone inspection is often an efficient first stage visual data collection method, but some findings may require follow up physical or specialist inspection. A drone does not replace:

  • Physical testing such as adhesion, pull off or moisture meter readings
  • Touch inspection where hand on substrate assessment is specified
  • Intrusive investigation and opening up works
  • Material sampling and laboratory analysis
  • Repair or remedial works of any kind
  • Internal access, or areas where flight is unsuitable or not permitted
  • Engineering sign off and certification
  • Specialist surveying opinion

Drone inspection versus conventional access

Each method has a job it does best. The right choice depends on the asset, the brief and whether physical contact is needed.

  • Mobilisation. Drone and MEWP are usually quickest to arrange. Scaffolding needs design, permits and erection time. Rope access needs a qualified team and a rescue plan.
  • Visual access. Drone reaches most external surfaces including steep and tall areas. MEWP is limited by reach and ground conditions. Scaffolding and rope access give close visual access to the areas they cover.
  • Physical access. Only scaffolding, MEWP and rope access put a person on the structure. A drone cannot touch the asset.
  • Site disruption. Drone flights are short and usually need little ground space. Scaffolding and MEWP can affect access, parking and highways.
  • Data capture. Drone capture can cover external surfaces methodically, subject to the agreed scope and safe operating conditions. Manual capture depends on where the inspector can stand.
  • Repeat visits. Repeat aerial imagery can help organisations monitor visible changes in the condition of buildings, infrastructure and other assets over time, where capture requirements are agreed in advance.
  • Physical testing. Not possible by drone. Where testing, sampling or repair is in scope, physical access is required regardless.

Pilot and regulatory requirements

Drone Assisted checks pilot identity, commercial drone insurance and appropriate CAA registration as part of network onboarding. Additional competency, qualifications, specialist equipment and Operational Authorisation are checked where required for the proposed assignment.
