What is drone mapping?

Drone mapping generally involves capturing overlapping aerial imagery, or other suitable sensor data, across a defined area. Depending on the equipment and methodology used, that data can potentially be processed into spatial outputs for visualisation, measurement, monitoring or analysis.

There is no single mandatory workflow. Capture patterns, altitude, sensor choice, positioning method, control and processing software all vary between projects and between pilots on the network.

The appropriate approach depends on the site, intended use, required outputs and accuracy requirement.

What can drone mapping produce?

The outputs available vary according to the assignment, capture method, pilot capability, equipment and agreed processing requirements. The following are potential outputs rather than a standard package.

Orthomosaic imagery

Overlapping aerial images can potentially be processed into a geometrically corrected overhead image of a site, which can then be viewed and, where the methodology supports it, measured.

3D models

For suitable projects, photogrammetric capture can potentially be used to create three dimensional digital representations of land, sites, structures or assets for visualisation and design context.

Point clouds

Some mapping workflows can generate collections of spatial points which may support visualisation, modelling and measurement.

Surface models

Depending on the methodology, elevation related outputs such as digital surface models may be produced. Bare earth terrain modelling is not produced as standard and depends on the capture method, site conditions and agreed processing.

Volume calculations

For suitable sites and methodologies, drone mapping data may support volume calculations such as stockpile measurement or comparative site analysis. Drone derived volumes are not appropriate for every commercial or contractual measurement requirement, so the intended use should be stated in the brief.

Progress mapping

Repeat aerial capture can potentially provide a visual record of change over time for construction and development projects. Where repeatability to a defined tolerance is needed, that requirement should be agreed in advance so an appropriate methodology can be established.

Drone mapping methods

Photogrammetry

Overlapping imagery may be processed to derive mapping and three dimensional outputs. It is the most common approach to commercial drone mapping.

RTK and PPK

Some appropriately equipped pilots operate aircraft capable of enhanced satellite positioning techniques such as RTK or PPK. These capabilities may be useful where higher positional accuracy is required. They are not available on every assignment.

Ground control

Ground control or check points may be appropriate depending on the required methodology and accuracy, and can also be used to independently validate a result.

Specialist sensors

Different projects may require different cameras or sensors. Where specialist capability such as LiDAR or multispectral capture is needed, Drone Assisted assesses whether a suitably equipped pilot is available before the assignment is confirmed.

How accurate can drone mapping be?

Drone mapping accuracy depends on factors including aircraft, camera or sensor, flight altitude, ground sampling distance, positioning technology, ground control, site conditions and processing methodology.

For suitably designed projects using appropriate equipment and control methods, highly accurate outputs, including centimetre level accuracy in some circumstances, may be achievable. However, there is no single accuracy level applicable to every Drone Assisted mapping assignment.

Where accuracy is important, the required tolerance should be established before the job so that appropriate pilot, equipment and methodology can be assessed.

Mapping data and professional surveying

Drone mapping can provide valuable aerial spatial data, but the appropriate methodology depends on how that information will be used.

Where a project requires legally certified boundaries, professional survey certification, engineering sign off or other regulated professional opinion, an appropriately qualified specialist may also be required.

Mapping file formats

Depending on the required workflow, mapping outputs may be supplied in different image, spatial or model formats. Examples may include:
