Not every type of infrastructure assignment can automatically be undertaken. Some environments require specialist competency, specific aircraft, particular sensors, Operational Authorisation, site owner permission, airspace permission, additional method statements, specialist induction or coordination with infrastructure operators. These requirements are assessed for each assignment before a pilot is matched.

Drone bridge inspection

Drone capture can record high resolution visual evidence of accessible external bridge elements without requiring personnel to access every area solely for photography. What can be reached depends heavily on the structure, its surroundings and the permitted operation, so underside and close proximity capture is assessed case by case rather than assumed.

Depending on the agreed brief and safe operating conditions, capture may include:

  • Decks and parapets where visible
  • Piers and abutments
  • External steelwork, masonry and concrete surfaces
  • Bearings where safely visible
  • Staining, corrosion indicators and cracking visible in imagery
  • Vegetation or obstruction affecting the asset

Drone imagery is inspection data. Structural interpretation, engineering assessment and certification remain the responsibility of appropriately qualified professionals.

Telecom tower and mast inspection

Aerial capture may support visual inspection of tower structures, antennas, mounts, dishes, external cabling, fixings, corrosion indicators, visible damage and general asset condition.

Telecom environments can present specialist operational considerations, including electromagnetic interference, proximity to structures, asset height, the surrounding environment, airspace and safe stand off distances. For that reason these assignments are capability matched to pilots with relevant experience, equipment and permissions. Not every pilot in the network is suitable for tower work.

Utilities and energy asset inspection

Aerial data capture may suit power infrastructure, utility structures, renewable assets, energy sites, pipelines where externally visible and associated industrial infrastructure, according to the agreed scope.

Electricity infrastructure requires particular care. Drone Assisted does not automatically undertake close proximity high voltage inspection. Scope, equipment, permissions and operating requirements are assessed with the asset owner before an assignment is accepted. Industrial drone inspection

Industrial assignments commonly cover chimneys, stacks, tanks, silos, gantries, warehouses, industrial roofs, external plant and other high level structures.

Drone inspection is most useful where the primary requirement is gathering visual evidence from difficult to view external areas. It does not replace non destructive testing, physical testing, intrusive inspection, engineering inspection or specialist certification, all of which require physical access and qualified professionals.

Infrastructure inspection deliverables

Deliverables are agreed before the assignment. Depending on that brief, outputs may include:

  • High resolution imagery. Detailed photographs of agreed asset surfaces and components.
  • Video. Overview, orbit or targeted video where appropriate.
  • Annotated imagery. Images identifying locations or observations where this has been agreed as part of the scope.
  • Thermal imagery. Where suitable sensors, conditions and specialist capability are required and available.
  • Organised evidence packs. Images and files organised by agreed asset areas, elevations, components or client requirements.
  • Repeat capture. Repeat imagery to support visual comparison over time where comparable capture is operationally practical.
  • Original files. Original imagery or data where requested as part of the assignment.

A formal engineering inspection report is only provided where the assignment specifically includes an appropriately qualified specialist.

Aerial capture can provide timely visual evidence following storm damage, accidental damage, suspected external deterioration, maintenance issues, impact damage or other asset incidents, before deciding whether physical access or specialist investigation is required.

The same evidence can support insurers, loss adjusters and asset managers reviewing a claim or a maintenance decision. Imagery records visible external condition at the time of capture; it does not determine liability or cause, which remain matters for appropriately qualified professionals. Infrastructure inspection planning

Complex infrastructure assignments can involve factors such as controlled airspace, nearby roads or railways, members of the public, critical infrastructure security, RF or electromagnetic environments, high structures, restricted sites, site inductions, client RAMS requirements, specialist PPE, permissions from asset owners, particular aircraft or sensors, and Operational Authorisation where required.
