Drone survey cost in the UK: what you should pay in 2026
Drone survey quotes in the UK vary wildly, and the reason is rarely the flying. This guide sets out realistic price ranges by survey type, explains what actually moves the number, and shows how to compare two quotes that look nothing alike.
Typical UK drone survey prices in 2026
Ranges below reflect what commercial operators across the Drone Assisted network quote for standard UK work, excluding VAT.
| Survey type | Typical price | What that buys |
|---|---|---|
| Roof survey, residential | £150 to £450 | Single property, visual imagery and structured report |
| Roof survey, commercial | £350 to £900 | Larger footprint, multiple roof levels and plant areas |
| Building or facade inspection | £250 to £700 | Full envelope captured across every elevation |
| Thermal survey | £400 to £1,200 | Radiometric capture, usually flown at dusk or dawn |
| Site or land survey with mapping | £450 to £1,200 | Orthomosaic, digital surface model, 3D outputs |
| Topographic survey with ground control | £800 to £2,500 | Survey grade accuracy with control points established |
| Construction progress capture | £250 to £600 per visit | Usually booked monthly on a retained basis |
| Solar array inspection | £400 to £1,500 | Priced per megawatt on larger arrays |
What actually drives the price
Deliverables, not flight time
The flight is often the cheapest part. Orthomosaics, point clouds, thermal analysis and written reporting are where processing hours accumulate, and that is what you are really paying for.
Airspace and site complexity
A rural site with open airspace is straightforward. A site inside a flight restriction zone, near a hospital helipad or over a busy public area needs planning, notification and sometimes an Operational Authorisation.
Accuracy requirements
Visual imagery needs no control. Survey grade accuracy of two to five centimetres needs ground control points established and processed, which can add half a day of work.
Access, travel and mobilisation
Distance from the nearest qualified pilot changes the quote. A national network reduces this because the closest pilot is matched rather than the cheapest travelling one.
Speed
Standard lead time in the UK is three to seven working days. A 48 hour turnaround typically adds 20 to 30 percent. Emergency mobilisation after storm or fire damage can be 1.5 to 2 times standard.
Repeat and portfolio work
Recurring monthly capture or a portfolio of sites is priced well below one off work because mobilisation and setup are amortised.
How to compare two quotes fairly
Two quotes for the same site can differ by a factor of three and both be honest. Before comparing headline numbers, make sure both operators have priced the same five things.
- 1. Deliverables. Raw imagery only, or processed outputs and a written report?
- 2. Accuracy. Visual reference, or measured accuracy with ground control?
- 3. Insurance. Commercial third party cover at the level your site or client requires.
- 4. Permissions. Who handles airspace checks, notifications and any Operational Authorisation.
- 5. Revisits. What happens if weather grounds the flight on the day.
Why the cheapest quote often costs more
A quote well below the ranges above usually means one of three things: the operator carries hobby level cover rather than commercial insurance, the site needs an Operational Authorisation the operator does not hold, or the job ends with a folder of images and no report. Any of those becomes expensive the moment the evidence has to stand up in an insurance file, a planning submission or a dispute.
Every pilot on the Drone Assisted network is competency checked, identity checked and insured for commercial work, and every job is delivered against the same reporting template. See our UK drone pilot day rate guide if you are pricing a pilot rather than a survey, or the CAA approval guide if you are unsure what permissions your site needs.
